A statistical analysis of traffic fatalities by the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), shows an estimated 20,160 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first half of 2021.

This represents an increase of about 18.4 percent as compared to 17,020 fatalities for the first half of 2020.

The NHTSA states this also represents the highest number of fatalities during the first half of the year since 2006 and the highest half-year percentage increase in the history of data recorded by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
